Binden, Tampons oder Menstruationstassen sind mit 20% Mehrwertsteuer, rechtlich als Luxusprodukte eingestuft und dadurch beispielsweise höher besteuert als ein Opernbesuch. Gerade liegt ein Antrag zur Steuersenkung von Monatshygieneartikeln im Finanzausschuss des österreichischen Nationalrats.
Als Hochschulvertretung der Akademie der bildenden Künste schließen wir uns der Forderung der schottischen Politikerin Monica Lennon an, dass der Zugang zu Monatshygieneprodukte ein Grundrecht ist und, dass diese in Schulen und Universitäten kostenlos zur Verfügung gestellt werden sollten, wie es in Schottland und Südafrika mittlerweile gehandhabt wird.
Die Luxussteuer auf Menstruationsprodukte wurde bereits in dem Vereinten Königreich (2000), Frankreich (2015), Kolombien (2018), Indien (2018) und Malaysien (2018) heruntergesetzt, in Australien (2018) wurde sie ganz abgeschafft und in Kanada und Irland sind Binden und Tampons komplett steuerfrei.

Menstruation is not a luxury!
Tampons and sanitary napkins are with 20% VAT considered luxury products and for example higher assed as a visit to the Opera. Currently the motion on tax reduction on female sanitary products is in the Financial Committee of the Austrian National Council.
As the Student representatives of the academy of fine arts we join the demand of the Scottish Politian Monica Lennon, that access to monthly sanitary products is a fundamental right and should be provided for free in schools and universities, as practiced by now in Scotland and South Africa.
The Tax on menstrual products was reduced in the United Kingdom (2000), France (2015), Colombia (2018), India (2018) and Malaysia (2018) and totally abolished in Australia (2018), and in Canada and Ireland there is no tax for menstrual hygiene products.
