In 2001, British artist Jeremy Deller re-enacted one of the most crucial moments from a recent chapter in British labor history and social struggle: the “Battle of Orgreave.” In 1984, the small village near Sheffield became a symbol of rampant neoliberalism — a force that not only destroyed the working conditions of thousands of miners and their historic unions, but also launched a direct attack on community structures and collective identity. Under then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the government-led dismantling of the welfare state involved not only the police and judicial system, but also the largest media agencies — making the threat highly visible. Jeremy Deller challenged this media-driven narrative, which was later proven to have been manipulated. He brought together thousands of former miners to re-enact this traumatic event at its original historical site. Can the wounds of the past be healed by collectively reliving them?
